Government consultation is live - have your say
The Government’s consultation on the future of local government in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is live. The consultation will gather responses on the four options submitted in November 2025 by local councils across the county.
The options would replace Cambridgeshire’s existing two-tier system consisting of: one county council, five district and city councils, and Peterborough City Council, with new unitary authorities. This would mean residents would deal with a single council responsible for delivering all local government services where they live, rather than services being split across different councils.
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for residents, communities, businesses, voluntary and community organisations to shape council services for decades to come.
The consultation is open from Thursday 5 February 2026 to Thursday 26 March 2026.

Phase Two survey summary
Between 3 September 2025 and 3 October 2025, residents and stakeholders from across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough shared their thoughts on LGR, specifically the proposal developed by Cambridgeshire County Council, known locally as Option A, via an online survey.
Phase Two results
A total of 1912 responses were received to the online survey. These comprised responses from residents, local council employees, elected representatives, and other stakeholders. 90% of respondents indicated that they were residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and of these, 58% were residents living in the proposed northern authority and 42% were residents living in the proposed southern authority.
