Burwell and Fordham Active Travel Survey
Overview
Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) strives to create a greener, fairer and more caring Cambridgeshire for all residents and communities. The county’s ambitions include making travel across the county safer and more environmentally sustainable and helping residents live healthier, more independent lives. An Active Travel Strategy was created to support this ambition, enabling and encouraging a shift away from journeys made by private car.
Active travel refers to walking, wheeling and cycling. Including the use of mobility aids such as wheelchairs and pushchairs as well as scooters and adapted cycles.
East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC) want to improve local active travel infrastructure within Burwell, within Fordham and between the two villages, so the Walk, Wheel, Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) was commissioned to produce the Burwell and Fordham Feasibility Study. This study outlines options for active travel provision within the villages and suggests a number of route alignments that could provide a link between them.
Funding has been made available by Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority for CCC to produce preliminary designs based on the Burwell and Fordham Feasibility Study. These designs would provide detail on proposals for active travel infrastructure between the villages and within each of them. This is necessary to apply for further funding (if and when it becomes available) to progress to construction and delivery stages.
We have carefully considered the six options for the active travel routes to link the two villages in the study and would recommend further developing ideas around option six, but are seeking views from local residents as part of this survey. This route runs between Burwell and Fordham via Exning using Burwell Road and Cotton End Road/Landwade Road and we would need to work closely with Suffolk County Council for the former section. It is preferred over other options as it does not involve complications with crossing the A142 and railway line, as well as providing a route for onward journeys to Newmarket. It also makes use of a fully funded new route along Burwell Road being taken forwards by Suffolk County Council linking Burwell and Exning.
We are carrying out this survey to understand local residents' views on active travel improvements on active travel links between the two villages and within Burwell and Fordham themselves, how residents are currently travelling and would like to travel in the areas, and whether active travel improvements could support increased active travelling.
